Installing
The software was preloaded on my FreeAgent drive, so I figured I would take it for a test spin. This couldn’t be any worse the the Western Digital software that comes preloaded on the passports.
The benefits of updating
After the install the I noticed a nasty looking segate logo in my taskbar. It was green, which told me it saw the segate hardware. When I launched the software for the first time, it asked me to install the new updates. After installing the updates, the icon in the taskbar disappeared. Apparently someone was thinking the same as me.
Simple & Clean
The gui is designed for the normal everyday user in mind. The first screen shot shows your drive is connected and how much space you got.
The second screen below, shows the two basic options you are given for backuping your data. Most users can just pick the first option and you personal documents will be backed up. The more advanced user would pick the “custom” route.
Turn the Lights Out the Seagate FreeAgent
You can turn off the light on your drive via the Seagate Manager. If you sleep in the same room this would be really handy. Also, if you don’t want the breathing strobe on all the time, you can switch that off with ease.
Syncing files
Syncing is different than backing up data. It’s real time, unlike the backups. If you add a new folder it will automatically add the folder to the drive as well. There can be some draw backs to this, but for the average Joe, this is a clean feature.
Overall Feel
I like it. The newest version is clean and simple.
