Operating System: Windows XP
Type: Malware Cleanup
My neighbors keep me busy. They are constantly being plagued with Fake.Alert viruses/malware. If you find yourself with a false antivirus on your computer, but you can’t launch any programs. You will need to do the following.
Warning: Remember that messing around with the registry can cause harm to your computer. If you do not feel safe doing this please contact a professional IT repair service.
- Rename your regedit.exe to regedit.com (c:\windows\regedit.exe)
- Note: If you cannot see the extension “.exe” on the end of regedit you will need to enable the explorer to see file extensions. See: Show file extension in Windows XP.
- Launch regedit.com and navigate to this entry:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\shell\open\command
- Make sure the entry value is set to: “%1″ %*
- Note: If the value is not set to the default, you are more than likely infected with some type of virus or malware.
- Delete the value you have and copy and past “%1″%* as the value. This will allow you to launch programs again, so you can clean and remove infections you may have on your system.

Funny to see you post this when I just ran across the same issue and fixed it earlier today.
I'm one with the claydawg
so what if it is already or still like that and i stilll cant run anything at all?
The situation I'm talking about is when you try to run a .exe or program it displays the dialog box asking what program to use to open this file.
When you try to run something what is it doing? Is it asking what to run the program with or is it just not running at all?
