Attack on Bridge in Small Town USA

Bridge Attack
Pontotoc Progress ©2007

Where: Pontotoc, MS
When: Jan-February of 2007 (unsure of exact date)

We don’t know why, nor do we know who attempted this. It happened on a Hwy 6 going into Lee County coming from Pontotoc County. Local police and law enforcement couldn’t determine anything about the attack other than it was an attack…wow! :)

The land in which the bridge and new highway was built on, was taken or acquired by the Mississippi highway department. I was even in a court case about the land acquisitions of the State Department taken some land from a guy who lives about a stones throw from the bridge.  Either way, it could have been somebody pissed off at the whole acquisition deal, or just a bunch of drunk rednecks. Either way…nobody knows.

All we know is they used an unknown explosive device. Evidence was sent off to a crime lab, but absolutely no information on the results have been reported. To see a high resolution picture click here .

There was a small article that ran in the Pontotoc Progress about this event, but no real details was given other than what you read here.

UPDATE
On Wednesday the 7th of March the Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) repaired the bridge going into Tupelo. It looks as if it never happened.

Inverter Board - Laptop Screen Problems

“If the backlight on your computer suddenly stopped working but you still can see a faint image, then most likely the problem is caused by a failed FL inverter board.”

FL inverter board. This board is responsible for converting low voltage DC power (point 3) to high voltage AC (point 4), necessary to light up the backlight bulb. If the FL inverter board is bad, the LCD screen (backlight bulb) will not light up when you turn on the laptop, but you still should be able to see a very dim image on the screen.

Last week I had a guy bring in his laptop claiming he could still see the image on his laptop screen, but it wasn’t bright at all. When the laptop arrived it powered up and I saw a good working Laptop screen full of color.

After about 10 seconds the screen seemed to go black or turn off. At first I thought it was the blacklight going bad, but the guy was right about the screen being “dim”.

I could actually still see the desktop and all the workings of the computer, but it was so dim you could hardly make it out.

After looking at Google for about 5 minutes, I declared the FL inverter board was bad.

The replacement cost about $100.00 and then of course my company had to charge for labor. After the new board was popped in everything went back to work.

So, if you have a screen that is dim, faint, or barely visible….you might have a bad FL inverter board.

Microsoft Office 2003 Trying To Install ?

MS Office

Every time I try to open Internet Explorer and go to the web, it tries to install Microsoft Office 2003 Professional Edition. I already have that installed on my machine…”

If you would like to discuss this problem in the forums, click here

The Machine

  • Windows XP - SP2 (Service Pack 2)
  • Intel based
  • Was recently updated the day before during a thunder storm. I don’t know if the storm had anything do with this or if it was the updates.
  • This computer is a hand-me-down inside this none-profit organization.
  • The computer is kept updated and is scanned regularly for viruses & spyware.

The Problem
When trying to open Microsoft Internet Explorer a dialog box comes up and starts to install, what looks like, Microsoft Office 2003 or at least one of its components.

If you try to open or run any type of Microsoft program such as IE6, Office 2003, or any type of Microsoft tool this installer runs and tries to locate the install files for Office 2003.

You can cancel this installer and continue to load IE6 and surf the web, but on the other hand you cannot open any type of Microsoft Office product. Once you cancel the installer you get an error that says it cannot locate the pro11.msi file, but I doubt it will install if you actually put the install CDs in the drive.

Google Research

Google wasn’t too helpful. Everybody that had this same problem ended up getting no replies or none of the suggestions was worth anything.

The Fix

The only fix I’ve come across when Office tries to install itself every time you open a Microsoft application. Uninstall Microsoft Office. I have not found a work around, If I do I will post it here, but like many other people on the internet, they have had little success in doing so. Reinstall office should do the trick.

Tools to Think About

  • Magice Jelly Bean - It will show your Microsoft Office install keys, incase you have lost them.
  • Offcln.exe. - This is found on the actual Office install CD that will completely remove Office XP or Office 2003.
    • Offcln.exe Instructions:

      1. Insert the first disk of your Office CD set in the CD-ROM drive.
      2. From the Start menu or desktop, double-click My Computer.
      3. Right-click the icon for your CD-ROM drive, and then click Open.
      4. Double-click Files, and then double-click Pfiles.
      5. Double-click Msoffice. Then double-click Office11 or Office10 .
      6. Double-click Offcln.exe.
