
I work for a small internet service provider, that of course provides email accounts to all its customers. We also do website design so there some more email accounts if you throw them in there.
I was given the task of stopping spam and filtering unwanted emails. So, I’ve had to deal with spam and phishing activities before. This is probably why I’m so passionate about stopping spam and such.
Recently my girlfriend has been complaining about getting emails that want her banking account information to help some poor soul in Africa transfer some money.I believe we all get these emails time from time.
I usually tell her to delete them and put them on her block sender list, which really needs to be blocked by IP address rather than the sender’s email address.
I was doing some blog reading this morning and ran across my congressman’s website and he actually gave a link to where you can forward these emails to. I figured if the old fart can put that on his site so can I.
I know what a lot of you are thinking, that this won’t do a bit of good. Well, maybe so, but I have to try. I would like to think that federal workers try to accomplish something before they go home each day.
The Federal Trade Commission is the organization that is running the website onguard.gov
You will need to forward spam that is phishing for information to spam@uce.gov and to the company, bank, or organization impersonated in the phishing email. You also may report phishing email to reportphishing@antiphishing.org. The Anti-Phishing Working Group, a consortium of ISPs, security vendors, financial institutions and law enforcement agencies, uses these reports to fight phishing.
