I already new wifi cards are not supported very heavily in the open source community but I didn’t let that get me down.I had a customer bring me their gateway laptop back when SUSE was on 10.1. It took me four hours to install it on that guys laptop with something called a ndiswrapper. The guy told me once the wrapper was installed then you could use a windows xp driver to install the wireless card. Like I said, four hours later and his wifi card was working.

Now, with this little run in I knew what a ndiswrapper was so I wasn’t going into this blindly, sort of? I loaded openSUSE 11 and tried to use madwifi to get the card to work. No luck. I switched over to Ubuntu 8.0 and I installed a ndiswrapper that a GUI and all I did was download the xp driver for the acer aspire 3100 off the UK website. I clicked the install driver for wifi card. Then I disabled the Atheros HAL driver rebooted and ubuntu was running wifi.

Now, why can’t openSUSE 11 do the same thing. I wasn’t going to let the ease of a GUI get in my way. So, I reloaded SUSE again and went to the respositories and searched ndiswrapper

1. Clicked on the search result that was bold, and read: ndiswrapper. When I told that one to install it auto added the one for my version of the kernal as well. So, it installs a main one with a kernal version as well. So, you are looking at 2 software items.

2. Next, I did this:

Installing Your Drivers

Open up a console window and execute su command (if you don’t know what that is, the su command means “switch user” which can be the super user — root—. It will ask you the root password).

Now type:

ndiswrapper -i /path/to/drivers/bcmwl5a.inf

Be sure to include the path to your .inf file.

You might refer directly to any windows owned folder. If the way to this folder (the pathname) contains white spaces, e.g. “Program Files”, it is recommended first to move with cd to the folder containing the required xxx.inf file:

cd '/windows/where the inf file is'
ndiswrapper -i this_and_that.inf

If all goes well, type:

ndiswrapper -l

If you installed a valid/compatible Windows-driver, ndiswrapper will display something like this:

<driver-name> : driver installed

device (xxxx:xxxx) present (alternate driver: <native-driver-name>)

Where <driver-name> shows the name of the windows driver installed with ndiswrapper and <native-driver-name> is the name of the Linux native driver being overridden. [Note: This native driver may need to be 'blacklist'ed if it is installed and is being detected, as indicated in the logfile: '/var/log/messages'. Blacklisting prevents the native driver from trying to operate the hardware, since we want ndiswrapper's driver to operate it. To blacklist a native driver, add a line to the file '/etc/modprobe.d/blacklist' that reads: 'blacklist <native-driver>' (without the single-quotes, where <native-driver> is the actual name of the driver to be blacklisted).]

If ndiswrapper says “invalid driver” then you need to uninstall that driver and try a different one.

Okay, the driver file name I used was: net511.inf. This is for the Atheros chipset on the wifi card in the Asprie 3100. If you can install the ndiswrapper, then get the windows driver install. you only like couple of things.
Start the wrapper: modprobe dniswrapper
Go black list this driver: ath_pci
Go to the file /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist

add line:

blacklist ath_pci

And then reboot.

I did this and my wireless started working on the next reboot, on my Acer Asipre 3100 Open SUSE 11. I wrote this at 2:10 am in the morning forgive my typos, I just didn’t want to forget anything I just did.

I installed the plugin wp-cache. This was a big mistake, for me of course, others might have a different story. Out of the box wp-cache would cause my blog to throw 500 server errors every other time you would refresh the page. There were no problems with the Admin dashboard. So, I knew it had to be related with the plugin. So, I tried to delete the cache inside the plugin, that didn’t work. I tried to disable the plugin, that didn’t work either.

So, the order in which I stopped this plugin from causing havoc on my site was this.

Go and delete the cache out of the plugins settings page. (Even if there is nothing to delete)

The disable wp-cache from the settings page. (Dashboard –> Settings –> WP-Cache)NOT THE PLUGIN PAGE.

Then I deleted the plugin from my plugin directory.

I knew it had to be a registry key. So, I googled and this page helped a lot. You can either download Avira’s registry cleaner and it will remove the registry key that will allow you to install AntiVir or you can delete them manually.

Keys needing Deleteing:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Avira

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\H+BEDV

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\X-AVCSD

Also, this is the page with the download for the registry cleaner:

After uninstalling AVG 8 it left the firefox plugins behind. This wouldn’t let me install or uninstall any other add-ons. I started firefox in safe-mode. You can do this by going to start then to mozilla firefox and clicking on safe mode. I then chose to disable all add-ons before launching firefox 3. I got to the add-ons screen and unistall and disabled the AVG add-ons. Then I restarted firefox and all my plugins started to install correctly. Just a heads up.

In the last week, I’ve either had to use different antivirus programs due to fact that certain aspects of the new AVG 8.0 will not work.

First Computer:
AVG 8.0 will not work if you have an out dated version of Roxio on your computer. I’ve tried to uninstall Roxio and clean up the registry, but the AVG installer reports that Roxio is still installed on the computer. Since I knew Roxio was gone, I installed AVG. After I rebooted the update service that keeps AVG running would not work, and you did not have the ability to do a full system scan. I had to take it off and I put Bitdefender on the system.

Second Computer:

After removing Roxio from another computer and AVG actually acknowledged that it was uninstalled, so I went ahead with the installation. Everything went great till i rebooted and went to do the updates. Now, pay attention to this: AVG installs some type of network service that hosed up the internet connection and there was not way for me to get around it. I justed uninstalled AVG again and put AntiVir on the system.

It’s like I said as soon as a software company starts with the glossy button and the fancy user interface all hope is lost. AVG use to be as simple as install and walk away, but now I fear that Grisoft has fallen in the path that Norton and McAfee chose to take.

I have no idea what they were doing. But in my attempt to investigate the problem. I navigated my Firefox 3 beta 5 to the Godaddy site, and as soon as I Iogged in Firefox would crash. I’m not sure what is causing it, but it sure is annoying.

BTW: Godaddy did post a notice that they were having technical difficulties last night.
